samenvatting: International research indicates trans women are at higher risk of sexual violence than cisgender women. In Australia, a recent survey of trans and gender diverse people that asked participants "Have you ever been forced or frightened into doing something sexually that you did not want to do?" reported that 53.2 percent had experienced sexual violence compared to 13.3 percent of the broader Australian population. Trans women of colour face discrimination and violence on the basis of the intersection of their gender and racial identities and, for some, their sexual identities as queer women. However, there is an absence of Australian research investigating the experiences of sexual violence among trans women of colour. The experiences and needs of trans women in relation to sexual violence remain poorly understood by many healthcare providers, legislators, police and policymakers, with the experiences and needs of trans women of colour from CALD backgrounds being the least understood. The absence of culturally competent information and knowledge about transgender experience, accompanied by misinformation, can lead to stigma, prejudice and discrimination, resulting in unmet needs for trans women. This can have serious consequences for trans women?s physical and psychological wellbeing. Trans women of colour from a CALD background, as well as women who identify as lesbian, bisexual or queer, may experience additional prejudice and discrimination, due to the intersection of gender, sexuality, race and religion. The research uses women of colour to refer to the ethnic identities of the trans women interviewed as it was preferred by participants. The term CALD is used to describe culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to distinguish between white, Anglo-Australians and culturally and linguistically diverse Australians.

Gender affirmation and social exclusion amongst trans women of color in Australia  / Jane M. Ussher ...[et al.].

International Journal of Transgender Health, 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 79-96
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 79-96
samenvatting: Transgender (trans) women of color navigate the intersected identity frames of gender, race, social class and sexuality, whilst facing multiple layers of stigma, discrimination and violence during and following gender affirmation. However, little is known about the ways in which trans women of color negotiate gender affirmation, in the context of the risk of social exclusion and violence. This article discusses the experience and construction of gender transitioning and gender affirmation for trans women of color living in Australia, associated with the risk of social exclusion or violence. In-depth interviews and photovoice were conducted with 31 trans women of color, analyzed through theoretical thematic analysis informed by intersectionality theory. The following themes were identifed: 1) 'Gender affirmation: A bittersweet experience', with three subthemes: 'Self-empowerment is tempered by family rejection', 'Migration facilitates gender affirmation' and 'Gender affirmation and social support'; 2) 'Being a trans woman of color', subthemes: 'Bodily agency and passing', 'Femininity as pleasure and cultural self-expression', and 'Resisting archetypal White hetero-femininity'; 3) 'Hormones, surgical intervention and navigating the health syste'. Gender transitioning and gender affirmation involved the intersection of gender, cultural, social class and sexual identities, accomplished through personal agency and with the support of significant others. To ensure that policy and support services meet the needs of trans women of color, it is critical that the voices of such multiply-marginalized women are at the center of leadership, program and policy development.

Transitioning gender, transitioning race: Transgender people and multiracial positionality  / Kylan Mattias de Vries & Carey Jean Sojkab.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 97-107
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 97-107
samenvatting: While research on trans People of Color's experiences has been increasing in recent years, this intersectional work has often not included a focus on the specificities of multiracial and multiethnic trans experiences. This study explores shifts in racial identity by multiracial/multiethnic trans people as they transition gender and the ways Whiteness and nationalist ideology shape their racialized gender experiences. This paper is based on six in-depth, semi-structured interviews with self-identified multiracial, multiethnic, and multi-heritage trans people in the USA. Data collection centered participants' experiences of self-identification and interactions with others (e.g., family, acquaintances, and strangers). As participants transitioned gender and were acknowledged by others in their gender identity, shifts in their embodiment were used by others to ascribe a new racialized gender. This often resulted in participants reflecting on their sense of self and racialized gender identities in new ways. Multiracial and multiethnic transgender people's experiences in transitioning race confirm the importance of intersectional analysis, reveal the intersectional fluidity of social categories, explicate how social understandings of one category (e.g., race) influence another category (e.g., gender), demonstrate that the meanings associated with racialized gender are based in relations of power, and show that, in transgender studies particularly, we must attend to the ways that the concept of transition implicates not only gender, but also other categories such as race and nationality.

Broaching partially-shared identities: Critically interrogating power and intragroup dynamics in counseling practice with trans people of Color  / Adrienne N. Erby & Mickey E. White.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 122-132
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 122-132
samenvatting: Much of the literature on transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) experiences in counseling focuses on White experiences with few recommendations for trans people of Color (TPOC). Research suggests mental health care providers lack intersectional sensitivity with TPOC, lack knowledge of TGNB issues and engage in microaggressive behaviors, notably with Queer-identified clinicians. To explore issues of power and privilege in the counseling relationship with Queer-identified clinicians and apply the multidimensional model of broaching behavior with TGNB clients of Color. A critical review of conceptual and empirical literature focusing on the interaction and impact of client and clinician race, gender, and sexual/affectional identities in the counseling relationship is presented. Informed by the authors' counseling experiences and respective positionalities as a Black Queer ciswoman and a White Queer transman, the multidimensional model of broaching behavior is applied to a composite case vignette. The model provides a practical tool to facilitate critical conversations of power, privilege and identity in the counseling relationship. With a dearth of scholarship addressing the role of cisgender or White privilege in the counseling relationship, this article outlines strategies to broach issues partially-shared identities with TGNB clients of Color. Recommendations for culturally informed counseling practice, supervision and research are also provided.

Double jeopardy: Minority stress and the influence of transgender identity and race/ethnicity  / Krystina Millar & Caroline V. Brooks.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 133-148
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 133-148
samenvatting: Prior research suggests transgender individuals with multiple minority statuses experience higher psychological stress compared to their singly disadvantaged counterparts, and both Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and transgender minorities experience more frequent and severe forms of discrimination than White and cisgender individuals. This study aims to examine racial/ethnic differences in gender-related discrimination and psychological distress within a sample of transgender individuals. Using data from a convenience sample of 99 self-identified transgender adults recruited through North American LGBTQ organizations, data were analyzed to determine the relationship between race/ethnicity, gender minority stress, and psychological distress. When White and BIPOC participants are compared, no significant group differences were found in levels of gender discrimination or victimization. However, some individual racial/ethnic groups reported significantly higher or lower scores and results indicate that changes in reported gender minority stress are in fact positively correlated with reported psychological distress. Conclusion: This research highlights that BIPOC are a heterogeneous group; by solely examining race/ethnicity as a binary variable, studies mask potential important differences among different groups.

Queering intimate emotions: Trans/nonbinary people negotiating emotional expectations in intimate relationships  / Alithia Zamantakis.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 581-597
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 581-597
samenvatting: I analyze the ways in which trans/nonbinary participants queered gender labor and emotion work in intimate relationships by negotiating expectations to feel "proper" ways for intimates and to educate intimates about cis-ness/whiteness. Based on semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 15 trans/nonbinary individuals utilizing photo elicitation methods, participants queered intimate emotions by negotiating, reconfiguring, and resisting emotional expectations. They did this through selectively dating trans/nonbinary people and/or queer/trans people of color. Queering intimate emotions functioned to mitigate the effects of whiteness and cis-ness within intimate relationships. I build upon literature on gender labor, emotion work, and trans emotionalities.
